The High Dive…

(From the song “Wings of an Eagle”)

REVIEW: Jesus took our sin and gave us his righteousness.

“But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.

They will soar high on wings like eagles.

They will run and not grow weary.

They will walk and not faint.”

Isaiah 40:31 NIV

Growing up, one of my favorite things to do was go swimming at the city pool. At our pool they had a diving area that had three diving boards. One was low, like most diving boards. Another was about ten feet high. And then there was the third one. It wasn’t a diving board, but a cement platform. I don’t know how high it was, but it was high! It was almost like jumping off a building! All of us had to work up our courage to climb up that long ladder and step out to the edge. It wasn’t unusual for kids to be too afraid to jump once they were up there and a lifeguard would have to help them.

Even though that high dive made my hands shake and my stomach feel a little sick, I couldn’t resist it. I must have jumped off of it 50 times in my years swimming there. What drew me to keep jumping was the feeling I’d get in those few moments when I was in the air. It was the closest I had ever felt to flying.

Did you know eagles can fly very fast? They can go as fast as 35-45 miles per hour, which is as fast as a car cruising down the street. When they’re diving down to catch a fish, they can reach almost 100 miles per hour! Imagine being able to do that. Picture yourself being able to soar and go anywhere you want, just like an eagle. Next time you’re outside, look at some birds (even if they’re not eagles). Look at how they can fly around, free. What a feeling that must be to look down and see the top of trees and houses. If you’ve ever flown in an airplane, maybe you’ve seen what that looks like. But an eagle feels the wind blowing and the sun shining on his back.

With Jesus, you feel like that in your heart. You can feel the joy and freedom of flying. With Jesus, we have hope and eternal life. Our sin is forgiven. In hearts, we’re as free as an eagle.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

Have you ever wished you could fly? If you could fly, where would you fly to?

What do you think it means to feel like you’re flying in your heart?

ART: Draw a picture of a bird flying high over trees and buildings.

PRAY: “Lord, thank you that because of Jesus, we can fly like eagles in our hearts.”chapter-13.jpg
